Will-o’- the-Wisp | Fogo-Fátuo, João Pedro Rodrigues, 2022, 67m
A deeply queer, very political near musical that touches on the importance of trees, firefighters, love and art, while kicking against dying conservative institutes. Cannes 2022
On his deathbed, his royal highness Alfredo, King without a crown, is taken back to distant youth memories and the time he dreamt of becoming a fireman. The encounter with instructor Afonso from the fire brigade, opens a new chapter in the life of the two young men devoted to love and desire, and the will to change the status quo.
The latest feature from Portuguese master João Pedro Rodrigues (whose last film The Ornithologist, a deeply queer, very political recreation of the Stations of the Cross was one of our favourite films of 2016) comes in at a giddy 67 minutes—traversing questions of nationality, monarchy, colonisation and representation, while parlaying the environmental and sexual implications of how to hold a fireman’s hose properly.
